Hi😊,- nice to see you 😊
Today it is St.Hans, or Jonsok or like they call this day in Spain,- San Juan. Its midsummer- celebration many places in Europe, in different ways 🔥🌞.
In Norway we know midsummer has at least been celebrating since year 400, but probably earlier. It is a norse and ancient tradition. It was a celebration for the summer and the nature,- and special to keep evil spirits away from the crops, home and the peoples souls,- and to get rich crops for the autumn.
To do this the people had big bonfires, and they also collected spices and herbs, and different summer flowers, and hang them up around in theier homes. The bonfire did keep away the evil spirits, and the flowers, herbs and spices should give good and big crobs, and fertility.
They had big celebrations around the big bonfire with easy snacks and different kind of drinks at the evening 23.June. As bigger the bonfire was, as better for keep away the evil spirits. It was a big “party-time” 🔥🥀🎉🍵🍻🍺.
It was beer and dance, games and fun until around a place between year 1500- 1600 when the reformation made “the entree” in Norway, and it became a Christian celebration to honor of Johannes the Baptist insted. And the celebration did get a Christian theme to celebrate. Johannes the Baptist and his birthday. According to religious writings, he was born 6 months before the christian Jesus, – on the 24. June.
A norwegian bonfire, normally with the coast and close to the sea,- but also in the inner-country. Norway is normally not a dry country (it can rain for weeks, even in the summer), so its possible to have bonfire away from the sea as well, as long its safe.
And some summerflowers to keep the home safe during the next 6 months, and hopefully get a rich crobs.
We still have big bonfire in Norway, and some of the bonfire are actually one of the biggest in the world 🔥🍀.
After the reformation between 1500-1600 the bonfire got another “meaning” – and stands for Johannes the Baptist work, inspiration to give the Christian the message, – and as a burning torch for the Baptist.
The 23. June is also the longest and lightest night,- and the sun has just turned (21.June).
Now the fire has a social function where people gathered around it together with family and friends for a pleasant get-together.
Its not a big “part” any more,- but its still a celebration with easy food, snacks and drinks, and bonfire . The hotdog is a tradition food also at St. Hans in Norway 😊🌭🍵🍺,- and some drinks coffee other beer or just soda-drinks 🥃.
Hotdogs,- we norwegian really like our hotdogs with different accessories,- and lets not forget the 7 different summerflowers under the summerpillow 🥀🍀🌹
Midsummer-night is a night with magic ☄. Its about fertility,- for the nature, for the crops and also for the LOVE ❤. If a young girl pick 7 different summerflowers and put them under her pillow she would dream, in the night from the 23.to the 24. June, about the man she was going to married. Her “love in life, her soulmate”.
I did try it a couple of times when I was young,- but he havent showed up yet,- the “long-last-forever” love 😉😍. And to be honest- I, unfortunately, didnt remember my dream when I did wake up after trying this “love-magic”,- so I was a bit disappointed 😅😉. Maybe I shuold try it again this night and see what my dream will tell me? 😊
And then it was the witches and sorcelmen. They left to a place called Blokksberg this night and had theier own celebration. If they didn’t manage to travel in time they was burned on the bonfire. Some places in Norway people still make drawings of witches and put the drawings in the bonfire. Its a “ritual” to keep away the evil spirits for the next 6 months. And witches and sorcelmen was evil spirits according to old traditions.
Im normally a witch at Halloween- its my “tradition” -this photo is from last Halloween….and I normally dont travel to Blokksberg 😅🔥 In the Midsummer,- Im just me,- maybe with 7 different summerflowers under my pillow this year? 😉 🌹 😊
The weather can be very different from place to place in Norway at midsummer evening. And people use the “power and signs” from the weather and nature “to tell” how the next 6 months will be. It can be how theier crobs will grow, or it can be how the weather will be. Its different traditions in the different areas.
And its not always sunny and warm, and a long, light summerevening and night. It can be rain and wind, cold, dark, foggy and so weet that the bonfire never been able to burn.
Im use to and grow up with bonfire and hotdogs on midsummer-night, spending time with family and friends in a relaxing atmosphere,- but yes,- it has also been “a couple” of St.Hans celebration we havent celebrate- outside with bonfire-, just because of the bad, bad weather. But inside with our tasty hotdogs 🌭😊.
This evening will be a touch of the spanish San Juan and probably hotdogs for dinner 😊🌭.
I wish you all a great midsummer-celebration where ever you are,- if its a norwegian one or a swedish one, a english one or a spanish one 💛🔥🌞.
Enjoy the magical midsummer-evening ☄💛🌞🔥. (…and if you are single- remember 7 different summerflowers under your pillow 🍀💛☄).
It can be a bit cold to celebrate a nice St. Hans in Norway ❄🌬 😉 😅,- so its good Im in Spain 🌞 ☄ 💛 😊.
